Engage in a cosmic war that stretches multiple galaxies in the massively multiplayer online shooter Warframe. While it may seem on the surface to be a free to play knock-off of Destiny, digging a little deeper will reveal a complex and lovingly crafted game with a collection of interlocking systems that work incredibly well together. While underwhelming at launch, it's since been the beneficiary of multiple tweaks and updates from the development team, resulting in one of the best persistent online shooters available.

While the story is rich and the world fully developed, most of the story is embedded in the setting itself, and your character is a faceless cipher lacking in personality and serving mostly as a point of view protagonist looking at the world from the outside. You play a Tenno, a recently awakened member of a warrior race doing combat with a nefarious enemy known as the Grineer. The story of your intergalactic war plays out in cut scenes and sequences during your missions, but it's really just window dressing for the combat and customization systems that have been lovingly crafted. This carries the DNA of traditional MMOs imprinted right on its sleeve. While there's a wide variety of missions that range from straight out assaults to collectible-laden quests to stealth missions, the general loop is the same. Your job is to grind through repeating levels to find supplies that you can use to upgrade your equipment so you can grind through more dangerous missions to collect supplies.

It's a loop that could easily become a slog if these two systems weren't solidly built and inherently fun. Combat allows for an incredible amount of acrobatics. Your character is essentially a ninja in a robot suit, and there are a lot of options on display for agile maneuverability. Instead of just charging your way through wave after wave of enemies, you have the opportunity to make the most of vertical space through the use of double jumps and wall runs. And you don't have to worry about your gameplay style getting stuck in a rut either. That core crafting loop is built around putting together versatile characters. While you pick a robot suit at the start, and that defines your general starting play style, there are tons more to build and collect, and the developer has done a great job making each of them feel distinct and strategically feasible. Suits aren't the only thing you'll be collecting. Main weapons and side arms can all be collected, and there's a generally satisfying feeling to most of the weapons you'll wield. These aren't just interchangeable guns with unique names and different stats.

While solo play is available, that means missing out on a lot of the fun. Teaming up with others to tackle the missions reaps larger rewards while also encouraging strategy, and a suite of competitive modes are also available.
